Death Sentences
Here is a haiku I wrote about Nguyen Tuong Van, an Australian 25 year old man on death row at Changi prison in Singapore, and a link that gives an update on his imminent execution.
australian man
locked away
waiting to be hung
heroin can kill
needle? no
singapore smuggle
twenty five years old
(just like me)
cries out for mummy
his traffic through life
friday night
will abruptly end
thankyou gods and stars
my mistakes?
not so cruelly met
shuffle off this here
mortal coil
try to rest in peace

Nobody should be executed anywhere ever. It cannot be punishment for ill doing when the punishment itself is the greatest ill.
Yes, I agree. Draconian punishments serve neither individuals nor society. It is an interesting situation here in Oz where a lot of folks have been calling for the death penalty for the people behind the Bali bombings and are now up in arms about the hanging of Van Nyuen. Shocking double standards and hypocrisy so far as I’m concerned. Patriotism (beyond a bit of a cheer for the odd footballing team who makes the World Cup for the first time in thirty years) is a bit sickly at times too.
I hear some file upload service wont let anyody upload any files from singapore because of it.
Hi, zapdude, not quite sure what that means, could you elaborate?
Here in Australia (see population map, tiny blot lower right corner) there was an amazing sense of sadness and solidarity with Nyugen’s plight; but the inevitable sick jokes are starting to surface: What’s worse than a funnel-web in Sydney?
A trap-door in Singapore.
